OPP 2010-11 Wrap-Up...
Posted on 2/7/2011

The Green Bay Packers' victory in Super Bowl XLV marks the end of the postseason 'week', and also the end of the 2nd annual Official Pigskin Pool.

First of all, congrats to MikeHawk, who puts together an amazing 5-for-6 performance in the NFL playoffs, including 25 crucial points on the Pack last night.  He nets 43 points overall to win the postseason crown.  He edged out the 5-Star Steamers, who went 8-2 for a +40.

And now on to the cumulative results...

Cumulative Picks: 18 weeks plus a postseason couldn't provide us a solo winner here.  Rinaldi's Deli and 22 Milez Away tie with an impressive 96 correct picks!  For reference, the total amount possible is 168 (assuming no passes, using all 25 pointers, etc.).  So they got over 57% of their picks correct, without even looking at optional 10 pointers that were not played.  Nicely done, fellas.

College Points: this one has been done for about a month.  He Man Rack amassed 181 points to win the college title, and Birdman claims 2nd place with 163 points.

Pro Points: Gator Nation ran away with the top spot on the pro side of the house this year.  He ended with 137 points, which was a very comfortable 36 points over the next best person.  Li'l Kurtz takes home 2nd place, leapfrogging Manhattan Beach Project with the Packers' win, ending with 101 points.

Cumulative Points: congratulations to the top 10, who clearly distanced themselves from the other 72 teams this season.  They all earned more than 150 points on the year, which is no small feat.  Without further ado...

   *10th place: Manhattan Beach Project (156 pts)
   * 9th place: Gator Nation (159 pts)
   * 8th place: Cheating Bastards (160 pts)
   * 7th place: Playing Harbaugh (166 pts)
   * 6th place: Birdman (172 pts)
   * 5th place: He Man Rack (182 pts)
   * 4th place: Li'l Kurtz (185 pts)
   * 3rd place: Rinaldi's Deli (190 pts)
   * 2nd place: VossMan (193 pts)

(drumroll, please........)

   * 1st place: Afternoon Delight (206 pts)

OPP version 2.0 has been a wild ride, if you ask me.  I'm humbled and honored to have gone through this journey with such an amazing group of competitors (end Hall of Fame acceptance speech)... In all seriousness, I had a great time this year, and I hope you all did too.  Good luck powering your way through the offseason, and I'll see you next year!

Super Bowl Picks are Published...
Posted on 2/4/2011

The final picks of the season have been made!  I'll do a bigger recap after the Super Bowl, but one quick observation is that EVERYONE that is currently in the top 10 and that made a pick are on the Packers' bandwagon!  That figures, since I (from my comfortable spot in 72nd place) had no doubt in my mind that I'd be picking the Steelers... it's been a rough season for the Commish.

First place has been locked up by Afternoon Delight for a few weeks now, but there is still a battle for 2nd & 3rd between Rinaldi's Deli and VossMan, along with potential shake-ups for the rest of the top 10.

Have fun watching the Super Bowl!

Angry Puppy gets a bone in Week 18...
Posted on 1/3/2011

In the final week of the regular season, Angry Puppy is the only team to hit on both his 25 and 10 pointers.  His 30 points is good enough for the win.  Los Borrachos goes 5-for-5, the only team to post a perfect week, and finishes in 2nd.

Overall, the league nets a pedestrian +23 for the week.  There were over 200 points on both the Steelers and Patriots, who covered their respective spreads in convincing fashion.  (As a side note, I was in attendance in Cleveland to watch the Men of Steel square off against the Brownies.  It was a nice balmy day in Cleveland.... my hands were still frozen despite having hand warmers inside winter gloves.  It was a bad sign for the home team that the Steelers already had 7 points on the 3rd play of the game from scrimmage, even though the Browns started with the ball!)

Cumulative Updates:

- Overall Points: Afternoon Delight sees his lead dwindle to 12 points ahead of 2nd place team Li'l Kurtz.
- Cumulative Picks: Rinaldi's Deli and Li'l Kurtz are tied at the top with 91 picks.
- College Points: haven't updated with any of the postseason results yet, so He Man Rack is still in first place with +178, good for a 10-point lead on Birdman.
- Pro Points: Gator Nation expands his lead... he's got +142 points, a 48-point lead on the 2nd place team, Li'l Kurtz.

Week 17 Picks Published...
Posted on 12/24/2010

Very brief comments this week for obvious reasons:

Nine 25's played this week, 2 of them already won on the Steelers on Thursday night (by Horse Man and Iron City Kid, who was in attendance at the game!).

Lock picks are Ravens, Cowboys, and Patriots.

Good luck to all, and happy holidays!

3-Way Tie in Week 16!!!
Posted on 12/21/2010

For the first time this season, we had NO ONE use a 25-pointer.  We also had our first 3-way (tie) for the year.  Surprise, surprise.  Gonzo's has a share of the weekly win... again!  He was in a 2-way in Week 14, and decided to invite one more to the party this week.  Grenade Free Foundation (our leader for the first half of the season) and Hurricane Ditka (our winner last year) got into the mix this week.  Congrats to all.

As a whole, the league netted +200 points, thanks to the 2 lock picks for the week (Falcons and Chargers) easily covering their respective spreads.

Scratch and Ragin' Cajun go "oh-fer" and pull down -25's.  These two, along with three other teams managed, to under-perform the handful of people that failed to make picks and took the automatic -15.

Cumulative Updates:

- Overall Points: it's still all Afternoon Delight with a 20 point lead on 2nd place team Li'l Kurtz.
- Cumulative Picks: Rinaldi's Deli is in first with 86 correct picks.  Li'l Kurtz is just 1 pick back.
- College Points: haven't updated with any of the postseason results yet, so He Man Rack is still in first place with +178, good for a 10-point lead on Birdman.
- Pro Points: Gator Nation expands his stranglehold... he's got +115 points, a commonding 36-point lead on the 2nd place team, Afternoon Delight.

Any Holes A Goal Scores in Week 15!!!
Posted on 12/14/2010

AHAG goes 4-2 for the week, hitting on his 25, 10, and 6 pointers, and finishing with a +36.  Being the only team to hit on a 25-pointer goes a long way in your bid to win the week in OPP!  He Man Rack is the only team that was perfect for the week, going 5-for-5 for a +25, to claim 2nd place.

Other performance of note: Chuck Norris' offspring disappoint their father with an abysmal -44 showing.

Overall, the OPP netted +109 with more than half the league posting positive points.

Cumulative Updates:

- Overall Points: Afternoon Delight still has the lead, finding himself 18 points ahead of 2nd place team Li'l Kurtz.
- Cumulative Picks: Li'l Kurtz and Rinaldi's Deli are tied at the top with 83 correct picks.
- College Points: He Man Rack is in first place with +178, good for a 10-point lead on Birdman.  This one will be decided in the bowl games.
- Pro Points: Gator Nation is in first here with +102 points, 20 ahead of the 2nd place team, F5.

Week 15 Picks Published...
Posted on 12/11/2010

Sorry for the delayed commentary this week... Les Grossman (and all his G5 Playah's, for that matter) correctly deduced that my 'commitments' last night were: 1) holiday parties, and 2) a whole lotta drinking.

I first want to address something that, due to my travel schedule, didn't get proper attention last week.  Count Chocula's Coinpurse had an unprecedented performance in Week 14.  He pulls off a first for the OPP, a 10-0-0 week!  Unbelievable.  His perfect +50 would have been good enough for the weekly win in 11 of the previous 13 weeks.  As luck would have it, though, the Count is on the outside looking in, with a 3rd place finish for the week.

So we're in the home stretch now.  Only 4 more weeeks in the regular season, and they will all be muted OPP weeks, only having pro games to choose from.  Time to buckle down and get serious.

25's: only three 25's played this week, one each on the Chargers, Bucs, and S'hawks.  Two of the three teams playing 25's got off on the wrong foot, picking the Colts on Thursday night.  The third team, Doppelbanger, banked 6 points with the Titans, so they are the favorite at the moment.  His other 5 picks were are all strategically chosen, in that they all have feathers.  That was literally the extent of his analysis.

Lock Picks: 36 teams lost a total of 212 points on the on the Colts, when they gave up a meaningless TD on the last play of the game, and the corresponding PAT on an untimed down.  The other two lock picks are also on road favorites, the Patriots and Falcons.

Good luck!

Big Daddy's Crew and Gonzo's Tie!!!
Posted on 12/7/2010

Is there anything more satisfying than finishing in a first place tie for the week in OPP??!!!  Big Daddy's Crew and Gonzo's both pop for 51 points in Week 14, narrowly edging out a no-doubt frustrated Count Chocula's Coinpurse, who finishes with 50.  Big Daddy's Crew vaults into 13th place overall with his performance.  Meanwhile VossMan, Li'l Kurtz, and Afternoon Delight continue to put on a clinic at the top of the league, as they all grab over 25 more points to solidify their positions overall.

Traveling this week.  Expect the weekly lines to be sent out via e-mail, then updated here on the website later in the week.

Week 14 Picks are Published...
Posted on 12/3/2010

Our final regular season week with both college and pro is underway.  We're coming down the homestretch...

- 25's: We have the most 25's in play in six weeks, with thirteen.  Two each are being played by Horse Man and The Dicks.  G-house has already gone down, and he took MikeHawk with him, as they put their faith in the Wildcats (who under-performed against the Sun Devils last night).

Lock Picks: the big points in college are on Oregon & Auburn as they make their final bids for the national championship.  Unfortunately for many of us, Arizona was also heavily picked.  In pro, the OPP put its faith on the Bears, Colts, Saints, and Falcons.

Big Games: both college and pro feature some intriguing games this weekend.  We have the numbers 1 and 2 teams in the country trying to fight their way into the National Championship game, as Oregon takes on in-state rival Oregon State, and Auburn has has to beat the Gamecocks (for a second time this season) for the SEC title.  In pro, we have two AFC divisional match-ups, with the Ravens squaring off against the Steelers, and Patriots hosting the NY Jets.

Good luck!!!

How Michael Jordan Tried To Save Football, And (May Have) Succeeded (At Least For Now)
by Chimpan-A

Posted on 11/11/2010

     So I was sitting on my couch watching the Colts/Eagles game last Sunday, hoping against hope that Peyton Manning would somehow bring the Colts back to lose by less than 2.5 points despite being clearly overmatched by a solid Eagles team. Indianapolis, of course, had been decimated by injuries to key players. But down by nine points with time running out in the fourth quarter, Manning led a spirited, spread-covering drive that sent OPP contenders like VossMan and Li'l Kurtz into a joyous frenzy.
     The key play on that drive? Facing 4th and 18 near mid-field, Manning threw an incomplete pass to Pierre Garcon. While standing in the pocket, however, he was grazed on the helmet by the hand of an on-rushing Eagles defensive lineman. Fifteen yards and an automatic first down later - not to mention a hilarious 30 seconds of commentator Phil Simms bumbling through a passionate and ill-advised defense of the roughing-the-passer call - Manning and Co. cruised in for the luckiest and most undeserved cover of the weekend. It was a classic reminder of how "soft" the NFL has become at times: a phantom call to protect one of the league's golden geese that leaves most of us simply shaking our heads.
     Earlier in the same game, though, there was also a reminder of how "hard" the NFL has become. Attempting to corral a Manning pass, Austin Collie was hammered by two Eagles defensive backs and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. (Isn't that always the most sobering part of seeing these big hits?
